BRIAN GREYNOLDS, RENSHI - 6TH DAN
President and Chief Instructor
Brian was born in Clarksburg, West Virginia in 1975 and raised in a little house on Jarvisville Road by his Mother and Grandfather. He began his martial arts journey at the Salem Karate Club in 1991 as a student of Sensei John Folsom, now 8th Dan, where he met many talented black belts who helped him in his martial arts journey. One of those black belts was Sensei Robert Leonard who promoted Sensei Greynolds to black belt level on July 14th, 1995. Sensei Greynolds was one of Sensei Leonard’s first black belts. Another black belt that made a huge impact on Sensei Greynolds martial arts journey is Sensei Jude Gore, 7th Dan. Sensei Gore has been a longtime friend and training partner of Sensei Greynolds for over 20 years.
In 2001 Sensei Greynolds traveled to meet Mr. Ernest Lieb the instructor of Sensei John Folsom. He returned with a new light in his eyes knowing that the American Karate System was an organization that he wanted to be part of. Brian joined the AKS in 2002 and traveled to Germany with Mr. Lieb in the fall of that same year. Sensei Greynolds and Sensei Gore started a club together in 2006, The St. James Karate Club, later rename the Mountaineer Karate Club. Mountaineer Karate Club is still in existence under Sensei Gore’s direction. Sensei Greynolds has achieved many goals with the American Karate System such as earning his 5th Degree Blackbelt in 2011, and awarded the AKS Black Belt of the Year at the 2013 AKS Annual Summer Camp.
After all the years of training Sensei Greynolds found himself looking for addition martial arts growth and was on the hunt for a Sensei that could help him in this journey. Sensei Greynolds knew of a person that could fill this need but he lived in Michigan. Sensei Greynolds met Hanshi Hayes in 2004 at AKS summer camp in Michigan and was able to work out with him and learn from him at many seminars over the years. Sensei Greynolds requested to become a student of Hanshi Hayes and was accepted into Yamashita Shorin-Ryu under the tutelage of Hanshi Hayes. Sensei Greynolds began making regular visits to Michigan to make the transition into Shorin-Ryu and learn from Hanshi Hayes 9th Dan. On January 27th, 2024 after 33 years of training Sensei Greynolds was awarded 6th degree black belt and given the title of Renshi by Hanshi Tadashi Yamashita. Sensei Greynolds began his new training alongside his wife, Shihan Jenica Greynolds.
JENICA GREYNOLDS, SHIHAN - 4TH DAN

Jenica started martial arts when she was 5 years old at the Salem Karate Club under Sensei John Folsom (8th dan). Many may still know her as "Little Nikki Bolden". She was fortunate to learn from many great black belts there including Gary Sokal, Robert (Part time) Leonard, Chad Rector, Jude Gore, Mark Brown, Tala, and Chuck Krum. The Salem Karate Club dojo was the old barn in Salem, and working out in there was tough, hot, and created black belts with a special kind of grit. Sparring was often times full contact, repetition bred muscle memory, strength, and stamina, and respect was at the forefront of every minute within those walls. She earned her black belt at 15 and continued to workout for a few years before life pulled her away from the martial arts. After a 20 year hiatus she reconnected with her now husband, Brian Greynolds, who sparked her love for the martial arts all over again. She is excited to learn and grow with him as her teacher, coach, and biggest fan.
Renshi Greynolds and Shihan Jenica founded Suibukan of WV in 2020 to train others in Yamashita Shorin-Ryu, Kobudo and Suikendo throughout West Virginia. They began teaching out of their basement before moving to a larger facility to allow for new students. As they continue to learn under the direction of Hanshi Yamashita and Hanshi Hayes, they are excited to see growth in themselves and the others they teach. Suibukan of West Virginia is now located inside Rival Fitness in Clarksburg West Virginia.
